workingclasshistory:On this day, 29 April 1938…

On this day, 29 April 1938, 1000 labourers working on the construction of a large sugar factory on the Frome estate in Jamaica went on strike and occupied the old factory demanding a pay increase to $1 a day from the West Indies Sugar Company. British colonial authorities brought in police who later killed 4 workers and arrested scores. But the repression triggered other strikes across the island.
