modernism-in-metroland: 81 Swains Lane, Highga…

81 Swains Lane, Highgate (1969) by John Winter

House opposite Highgate cemetery, built in Corten steel, and designed by John Winter for himself and his family. It was the first house to be built of this material in Britain, and Winter’s design was based on the size of a standard Corten sheet, minimising wastage. The plan of the house has the sleeping quarters in the middle of the three floors, with a quiet living area on top and a noisy area on the ground floor. The house is now Grade II* listed.
