Always Fresh – 2018

Always Fresh – 2018

While new condominium towers are commonplace in the City of Toronto a closed Tim Hortons is pretty unique.  A pretty rare find, this Tim Hortons closed down when a North York plaza/office was bought by a development company.  The fast food restaurant was moved into another unit of the building while this section would be demolished.  This photo was taken just before dark, my friend had mentioned there was an abandoned Tim Hortons somewhere in the plaza but I had trouble finding it initially.  There was some light coming in through the windows which acted as my fill light for the main light source which was a flashlight I had brought with me.

Getting Smaller – 2018

Getting Smaller – 2018

I had been watching this location for some time and I chose the right moment to photograph it, since only a couple of weeks later it was completely boarded up.  I would imagine that the owners of this former restaurant received a good sum of money when they sold this property to developers and closed down their restaurant. I was amazed to see that almost everything was left behind at this location, the tables and chairs you see in this photograph as well as dishes and like most restaurants everything within the kitchen itself.

Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Fire – 2017

Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Fire – 2017

The restaurant industry is a difficult business in which to be successful, there are far more failures than successes.  It’s a competitive market and probably oversaturated, not to mention they have to stay current in terms of menu choices and decor.  This particular restaurant The 6IX Bar & Grill was not successful and was not open for very long as far as I can tell.  The earliest review I could find was from January of last year and most of the reviews were not positive.  In April of the same year, the restaurant suffered from a fire in the overnight hours and by the time it was extinguished it had received significant fire and smoke damage.  I visited the location twice after its forced closure and spent a few hours each time trying to capture the feel and mood of the location. Several weeks after my visits the restaurant was demolished and now sits as an empty lot up for sale.

CHATEAU CINDERELLA

CHATEAU CINDERELLA

A virtually empty chateau, that once was a successful hotel and restaurant. I was not able to find anything on the history of the chateau itself. It has some nice natural decay and beautiful light that is bounced off the pastel painted walls. Some wannabe explorers have been lugging around with the few pieces of furniture that were left behind. Too bad some people can not seem to grasp a concept as easy as “take nothing but pictures; leave nothing but footprints and if you can, avoid the latter”. Such a shame…

CHATEAU AMBIANCE

CHATEAU AMBIANCE

Chateau Ambiance was founded almost half a century ago. It became one of the most classy restaurants in Belgium, with big names such as Charles Aznavour and the Belgian prince Albert among its clientele. In 2008 the founders felt the time had come to say goodbye to what had become their life’s work. After pouring their soul into the business for several decades, Chateau Ambiance was placed in the hands of new owners. It didn’t take too long though before things started going downhill. The former owners, who still live next to Chateau Ambiance could do nothing but watch how their life’s work was being destroyed. In 2011 the business went belly up and the new owners disappeared, leaving behind a pile of debt in the amount of 3.5 million euros (over 4 million USD). They were convicted for fraudulent bankrupcy. The interior of Chateau Ambiance was auctioned in an attempt to diminish the debt, but no one was found prepared to take over the business. Today the buildings are severly dilapidated. To the extent even that demolishing is the only solution. Soon Chateau Ambiance will be demolished to make room for a new residential housing project.

In the Shadows – 2017

In the shadows you will find this bar inside a fire damaged restaurant.  Fully stocked with liquor and beer still sitting on the shelves and inside the refrigerators, just pick up one of the glasses from the counter and you can drink to your heart’s content.

Fire, Fire, Fire – 2017

This fire damaged restaurant was extremely difficult to photograph, with natural light coming from only one direction and black soot covered walls, it made for an interesting challenge.  There was a kitchen fire at one point in time but the whole restaurant was a total write off with smoke damage throughout.
